Mondo is a pretty difficult genre. I myself have never been a HUGE fan of it... but I also cannot seem to not enjoy it when I do watch a mondo flick.

This documentary, about Jacopetti and Prosperi, put out as part of Blue Underground's boxset of their films, is in my opinion, every bit as interesting as any film that actually belongs in the genre. It gives these two scoundrels to give their side of their story, which is of course, interesting, if not skewed, especially when you get into such risque subjects as soliciting minors while shooting in Asia...

Anyway, if anyone is interested in the genre, I personally would recommend checking this documentary out, along with the big names in the genre, including of course, Mondo Cane.

I've always found it hard to get in to Mondo, it's probably safe to say I've given up entirely.

Have you seen this doc? It's actually really interesting. Lots of good stories about the productions of these films.

Haven't seen it yet but I'm sure I'll find it more interesting than the movies themselves. Smile

Is it still in print? I was going to buy some Blue Underground Mondo ages ago but it's was pretty expensive and out of print.

It's included in this three disk set. It can be found used on Amazong marketplace for like 4$ though, by itself.

Mondo and cannibal films are pretty lame in my book. Some bits are ok. I'm just not down with the animal killings[I'm sure you've heard that one before]. That isn't the reason I've completly shrugged them off. They just suck. Pass.

I have a few mondos Goodbye Uncle Tom, Slave Trade In The World Today,General Idi Amin Dada a Self Portrait, and The Evolution of Snuff. Here is some food for thought Ruggero Deodato made Cannibal Holocaust as a protest against the mondo film industry.

As a prostest? How did he figure that would work? Cannibal Holocaust is a completely violent assault on the senses.

Protest isn't the best word to use. Critique would be more appropriate.

And it is an accurate critique of the mondo film and the people that made them.

No. They've been replaced by the Direct-to-Market compilation films like BANNED FROM TV and the such.

Huge fan of this and my BU Mondo Cane boxset.

Gag worthy movies with incredible soundtracks and some (often times) beautiful photography.

Mondo films...INTO IT.

It's just a shame that more mondo films aren't as well photographed as these. I've seen dozens and they're mostly garbage.

Jacopetti and Prosperi most certainly had the eyes of great documentarians but their films are, still, inexcusable and largely racist films.

Good looking, but totally irresponsible.

Oh, completely irresponsible. However, it's absolutely fascinating to me that there was a time when something like this existed. Not only did it exist, but that it was done so well. Outrageous to say the least.
