Released between 1962 and 1974, the six films that make up the Lone Wolf and Cub series are arguably some of the best over the top, exploitive chambara films out there. They tell the story of Ogami Itto, formerly the Shogun's retainer and executioner... now he is a wandering assassin, for hire under the name (with his 3 year old son, Daigoro) Lone Wolf and Cub. Pursued by the Shogun's forces, and basically constantly wanted by some lord or another (wanted dead that is), the pair often find themselves under attack from all sides, by what should be superior forces (in one film the pair face off against an entire army... and live!)

These films feature some of the coolest, bloodiest samurai swordfighting I've ever seen, and am likely to ever seen. The geysers of arterial spray have yet to be topped!

The films are based on a manga (an extremely long running manga) by the same person responsible for the Lady Snowblood manga, both of which are HIGHLY recommended to anyone interested in these films.

What is your favorite LWAC flick?

The third film, Baby Cart to Hades, is probably my favorite, though the first four are all wonderful IMO.

This movie rocks. I've only seen the first 3 so far (though I actually own all six). I believe this was actually the first chambara film I ever saw.

I have the first one and enjoyed it a lot. If I come across the box set for the right price I'll pick it up.

The whole series is just amazing...I adore these films so much, I don't think I could choose a favorite out of the series, they just got better and better, I love the feel of them, the scenery, the insane fighting...really amazing films and is well worth picking up on DVD, I don't know how anyone could be disappointed by these films.
